Morning Rotary Meeting

Need a Make Up?  Can't make the evening meeting? Come to the Thursday Morning Auxillary Rotary Club Meeting.  Location?  Denny's.  Time? 7:00 AM.  Cost? Pay for your own meal!

Shirley Hartwick provided the invocation.
The flag salute was led by Dick Shaw.
Songs were led by Ron Peavy with an assist from Dick Shaw. 
Guests included Ray Hino, CEO, and Kathy Norris, HR Director, from Bear Valley Community Hospital.  Both Ray and Kathy are former Rotarians from other Rotary clubs and are considering joining Big Bear Lake Rotary.  John Vasquez, a potential new Rotary member, was also in attendance. 
Two members from Interact were in attendance and provided updates on the group’s activities.  Corey updated us on what is going on at the high school, while Jordan stated the RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award) will be coming up to Big Bear the last weekend in January.  Jordan stated that RYLA still needs one or two Rotarians to volunteer to open up their homes and host some RYLA members Thursday, January 30, and Friday, January 31.  If you can offer your home please contact John Stock or Mike Chilcoat. 
Corey and Jordan also presented a check for $1,000 to John Stock for the Peanut Butter project. 
This week’s raffle winner was guest and potential new Rotary member John Vasquez.  A white marble was once again pulled from the bag and John received $10, which he in turn donated back to the club.  The odds of picking the elusive black marble continue to improve.
Rich Collier reviewed the Nominating Committee’s officer recommendations for the coming year.
Rich also wanted to recognize a number of individuals who went the extra mile for the Santa Program this year:  Jim Miller for his tireless efforts in organizes all the bodies necessary to pull the event off; Scott Heule for arranging the location needed to prepare for the event; and Vince Smith and Jim Appleberry (sp?) who, while no longer members of Big Bear Lake Rotary, dedicated significant time and resources to assist with the Santa Program.  Thanks to all for making this event a huge success!
This week’s fine master was Fine Hair Guy Walt Con.  Dave Caretto was a “no show” but still paid his fine.  Jim Miller (Nelson) and Sheryl Nelson (Miller) were fined for having difficulties remembering their last names.  Carol Bremer celebrated a birthday and contributed $500 towards her Paul Harris Award.  Happy Birthday Carol!  Guest Ray Hino was asked to stand and do a 360 turn so we could all admire how well he was dressed.  Ron Peavy paid Ray’s “slick dress” fine.  New Rotary Foundation officers were acknowledged: Sheryl Nelson, President; Richard Miller, Vice President; John Stock, Treasurer; and Dave Johnson, Secretary.  Cliff Fowler and his company, Big Bear Traction, put off their fine until the “March Miracle” happens.  Jim Miller was fined for the newspaper article in the Grizzly about the past, present and future look at the quality of life initiatives and projects for the city of Big Bear Lake.  Jim acknowledged that the credit for the presentation should go to his staff member who put it together.  Jim stated that he would be show the presentation at a future Rotary meeting.  Marcus Dietz was fined for wearing a “summer” outfit in the middle of winter.  Tony Tamberchi was fined just for the “fun of it”.  Mike Curran was fined for showing up at the meeting at 7:01 even though he insisted he was there at 6:59.  Steve Schindler received a welcome back fine. 
The evening’s speakers were Don and Carol Bremer.  They provided an update on various fundraising projects.  Don noted that Big Bear Lake Rotary members had 100% participation in donating to Rotary Foundation.  Carol stated that 16 members and/or spouses of Big Bear Lake Rotary attended the Rotary Gala (we were the most prominent club in attendance).  Carol wanted the club to recognize all those who provided baskets to the Gala: Cliff Fowler, Shirley Hartwick, Dave Johnson, Maureen Shepherd, Skip Suhay, Renee Wagner, Tony Tamberchi, Larbi Loucif, Don & Carol Bremer and Charlie Brewster.  The upcoming Valentine’s Day Sweetheart Ball Fundraiser was discussed in detail.  Big Bear Lake Rotary is teaming up with the Bear Valley Hospital Foundation for this worthy cause which will aid in the updating and refurbishment of hospital patient rooms.  There are various levels of sponsorship available for the event.  For more information please contact:  Don or Carol Bremer at (909) 866-3689; Helen Walsh at (909) 8838-5874; or Dave Caretto at (909) 866-8481. 
The Sweetheart Ball will be held at Northwoods Resort Ballroom on Friday, February 14thCocktails will be served beginning at 5:00pm with dinner at 6:00pm.  The cost is $50 per person.  At table of ten is available for $450.
